Why WhatsApp stopped working on millions of smartphones

We know that WhatsApp has stopped working on millions of smartphones with old versions of Android, iOS and different small OS (phone with buttons) from first January of 2017.
Currently WhatsApp has introduced us some new features like doodling images, video calls hanging fonts, watching video prior to completion of download. It is hard for WhatsApp to carry on with older versions. This can be understood with the example of Android.
When we are preparing an android application we have to select a range of OS versions (e.g. 4.0 to 7.0). Thus our application should work on all smartphones with any version of OS in specified range. Due to this developer has to face limitations like if in latest version some facilities are present then also developer cannot use them since if they are not available in older versions of OS.
Though smartphones receive OS updates, their is a limitation due to hardware, so a device with older hardware cannot be always updated to latest versions of OS.
Hence what WhatsApp is doing is if a version of OS is not supporting their update then they are excluding that version.
For this reason WhatsApp has stopped working on millions of smartphones. But this gives us some good hope that developers of WhatsApp now have less limitations so better and bigger updates with new features may come.
